ComputerStuff - MasterPage

Published by bozoplay

(Shortly, this page will become a list of links to various helpful tips and the author’s views on software tried such as iGoogle. It has become apparent that a single page is insufficient room for the topic(s))

As we learn new stuff, we will add it here. You might want to use the Add This feature at the bottom to create a better link or just bookmark this page. We aren’t experts but we are willing to share what we’ve learned.

iGoogle

I like this for my home page. I use the devices called gadgets in the minimized state so you get more choices on your desk. If only my real desk could be kept this neat. Set up custom gadgets, as they call them, with  links to your favourite online games, Facebook , your blogs, etc. It makes navigating around the web easier than bookmarks. The To do List actually helps me get things done.

In my setup, only the todolist, clock & date, and local weather are maximized. You can change the overall themes so it doesn’t get stale. You choose how you like it to appear and what content you like.

Fast Dial (Firefox add-on)

Think of it as graphical speed dialer for your Firefox browser links. The image here is a screen shot of one of my setups. It’s always changing.

The add-on puts a menu selection on the pop up that shows when you right click on a web or blog page. It drops the link into the first available slot. The number of slots is adjustable. They provide access to a user based button database.

I mostly load the appropriate logo from web images and fill in empty space with a background colour (see About.com above, as an example using red background). Otherwise it takes a screen shot of the page you bookmarked. Or I make up a graphic (400 x 300 pixels) and type a name over it using Paint.

Dictionaries (Firefox add-on)

You don’t have to use US English for all your sites in Firefox. They have a wide selection of choices available as no charge options. I am Canadian so I use Canadian English, (go figure, I seem to always spell it Candain for some reason)
