Good Things Find A Way To Make It All Work Out

Published by bozoplay at 12:34 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Recently I was looking for the definition of google in another post (Is This Page 4? ) and tripped across this statement included in the definition of google. I pretty much learn most everything by the technique I call learning by poking around. Poking around But back to the defintion of google.

Google has attempted to discourage use of the word as a verb, fearing the dilution and potential loss of its trademark …

Sometimes we worry too much. I think the folks at google have done a wonderful job of enhancing our experience on the Internet. Almost everyday, I find myself playing with some new program or gadget that these folks are developing. Here’s just a few highlights. We hope to deal with each topic in more detail in ComputerStuff.

There are all kinds of help pages and help forums that talk to these subjects. Personally, I find them too long winded and hard to get stuff that you want. So the approach here is “Keep It Simple, StewPead” (KISS in broken English spoken by a French person. I’m not French but I find their accent most comforting and friendly)

OK. Some highlights.

Gmail

I’ve used others. This one is as simple or as complicated as you like. You can redirect other mailboxes to it and can even send from Gmail using your email address from the other box. This is useful if you want to use your pen-name most of the time but need to be more business like at other times. It’s free, so try it.

iGoogle

It makes a great homepage. The tendency is to put too much stuff on your desk. Remember less is more. I’ve trimmed it back to a big digital clock/calendar, combination dictionary/thesaurus/encyclopedia, local weather and google docs—lists(shopping/todo), boilerplate and scratchpad.

Google Docs

It’s another version of the office suites that you pay big dollars for. This one is free and is supposed to be compatible with Microsoft’s version. I haven’t found anything to dispute this claim.

Google Calendar

It’s more than just another calendar. It will email you your notice, send to your mobile phone, link with other calendars (why would you need more than one personal calendar), link with a friend’s or coworkers calendar.
